Some internet directories accept only free submissions, most accept only paid or paid & free, of course the latter one does never guarantee inclusion.

These are web directories with good reputation, some of them offer full refunds if your site is not accepted, prices for submissions vary, the highest prices are for submissions to the Yahoo Directory (around 300 $/year) and the Best Of The Web Directory, which asks roughly 50 $/year or around 150 $ for permanent listings.

It's important to get listed on internet directories that have high Google Page Rank, but don't forget to check their Alexa Rank and the number of Google backlinks that they have.

Because Google sees much fewer backlinks than MSN or Yahoo, it's important that their number is as large as possible. A site with several dozen Google backlinks is weak, while one with over 100 can be considered of medium importance. Only sites that have over 1.000 Google backlinks can be regarded as important ones. From the point of view of the backlinks of course.

The most important directories are the Yahoo Directory and Dmoz - The Open Directory (which is also known as the Google Directory).
